Packaging developer and producer TIPA has collaborated with technology innovation company ATI to launch a fully compostable high-barrier coffee capsule lid.

The capsule lid, said to be the first of its kind, is in line with the upcoming compostability legislation and enhances barrier protection, sealing properties, protection against material migration, and others.

The lid combines ATI’s patent-protected system with TIPA’s high-barrier film to support consistent flow and improve the taste experience.

TIPA’s high-barrier laminate, which has a circular end of life, is said to convert into nutrient-rich soil in a few months when placed in a compost bin.

The lid’s material, patent-protected by ATI, is claimed to be suitable for all compostable coffee capsules and its specific coffee filling lines and variations, including the Nespresso system.

TIPA CEO and co-founder Daphna Nissenbaum said: “Whilst compostable coffee capsules have been on the market for several years, the market is yet to develop effective lids to complement the capsules. Within this collaboration with ATI, TIPA has delivered a superior solution to the coffee market.

“The compostable coffee capsule lids ensure that there is a fully compostable and circular solution for coffee lovers whilst giving brands eco-friendly solutions developed by experts.”

According to TIPA, the plant-based lid has been certified by OK Biobased in their official laboratories. It has secured its highest accreditation of four stars, which ensures that the carbon content of the product is at least 80%.

The packaging firm also claimed that the compostable lidding material can be optimised alongside the coffee grind to get high extraction quality.

ATI CEO and founder Mark Klep said: “Over the last 13 years we have been pioneering the developments of laboratory-certified, durable and fully compostable packaging solutions.

“Our latest achievement of a patented coffee capsule lidding material developed with high OTR and WVTR in partnership with TIPA is a milestone for sustainability in the coffee industry.”

Currently, the new lid is available for purchase in the UK, Europe, and the US.
