Starbucks Coffee Company has started to accept reusable cups from customers who are ordering in the café, in the drive-thru, or through the Starbucks mobile app.

The move applies to all company-operated and participating licensed Starbucks stores across the US and Canada.

As part of the initiative, customers are allowed to use their own clean, personal cups for every visit at these locations.

The move aligns with Starbucks’ commitment to lower waste by 50% by 2030.

Starbucks is said to be the first national coffeehouse in the US to allow customers to use their own cups when placing a mobile order.

It also becomes the first company in Canada to let consumers order any drink, in any size, using a personal cup while using a mobile device.

According to Starbucks, the move is intended to encourage customers to use reusable cups instead of single-use ones on every visit.

Starbucks chief sustainability officer Michael Kobori said: “At Starbucks, we envision a future where every beverage can be served in a reusable cup.

“Offering customers more options to use a personal cup when they visit Starbucks marks tangible progress towards the future.

“We know our customers are passionate about the planet, and now, they can join us in our efforts to give more than we take, no matter how they order.”

As part of the initiative, customers at participating shops in the US and Canada who bring any clean, personal cup will receive a $0.10 discount on their beverage.

Additionally, Starbucks Rewards members in the US will receive 25 Bonus Stars.

The scheme of personal cup ordering across all channels is enabled by Starbucks’ test and learn strategy, which is guided by partners in the Starbucks Tryer Innovation Lab and at pilot sites around the US.

The initiation of this plan follows a successful personal cup test conducted at 200 drive-thrus around Colorado in the spring of last year.

Following this initiative, the coffee company consulted its partners to support the design of the reusable cup smallware that will be used by all locations to convert orders to personal cups.
