The Nordic ScanStar 2020 packaging competition was a celebration for Stora Enso, which received as many as three prizes from the competition.

The ScanStar 2020 awards were given to the potted flower transport package implemented for Kesko, the ice cream Christmas calendar of the Vanhan Porvoon Jäätelötehdas ice cream factory and the pellet box designed for Stora Enso Wood Products.

Cardboard packaging solutions replace plastic packaging and save space and costs. The award-winning packaging solutions highlighted the many advantages of corrugated packaging, such as low space requirements, thermal insulation and easy recyclability. All packaging is made of renewable wood fiber.

Stora Enso’s product designer Miia Vettenranta designed the structure for a new type of transport packaging for potted plants made of corrugated cardboard. The simple packaging solution is delivered flat, which takes up little transport and storage space. Packing the plant is effortless and no separate protective pot or gift wrapping is required. The potted flower package implemented for Kesko was praised by the jury for its ease of use and sorting.

The Christmas calendar, made of corrugated packaging, designed for the Vanhan Porvoon Jäätelötehdas ice cream factory contains 24 ice cream cups with different flavors. The goblets placed on the cardboard base remain firmly in place inside the package. The jury praised the attractiveness of the four-colour printed packaging. The ice cream Christmas calendar was designed by Stora Enso’s product designer Outi Honkavaara, whose ice cream package for the same customer was awarded with ScanStar in 2019.

In the design of the consumer packaging of wood pellets, special attention was paid to usability, recyclability and elegant design. The 12-kilo pellet box, which replaces the previously used plastic bag, is easy to bring home from the store thanks to the carrying handle. The pellets can be poured from the packaging hatch directly into the oven. The jury praised the pellet packaging’s high quality and efficient solution for transporting, storing and using the product. Stora Enso’s product designer Karoliina Pennanen and the Packaging Automation team have jointly designed the structure and functionality of the packaging, which is filled mechanically. A packaging automation solution was also included in the concept.

This year, 29 packaging solutions took part in the packaging competition, which has been held since 1969. There was a wide range of different types of packaging participating, from transport packaging to gift packaging.
