UK-based protective packaging maker Coveris has launched a new recyclable thermoforming film packaging, MonoFlex Thermoform, for packaging food products.

MonoFlex Thermoform is said to be a sustainable option to replace non-recyclable mixed material thermoforming substrates currently used for thermoforming packaging in food industries.

The company’s new packaging is made from high-performance monomaterials which achieves a carbon footprint reduction.

Aligned with Coveris’ sustainability policy, No Waste, the recyclable solutions are made of polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) and are completely nylon-free (PA).

Produced at Coveris facilities in Germany and the UK, MonoFlex Thermoform is made from laminated or single substrate co-extruded films, depending on the needs of the print job and the product application.

The film packaging provides enhanced EVOH barrier qualities for product protection and shelf life along with robust puncture resistance.

The innovation process, from the creation of the film formulations to the verification of their performance, including barrier properties, benefited greatly from Coveris’ Film Science Lab experience and the testing capabilities of the Pack Innovation Center.

MonoFlex Thermoform was designed with a broad operating window, maintaining packing speeds previously attained and enabling a smooth transition from other substrates.

According to Coveris, the packaging is suitable for a variety of bakery goods and other products used in the meat, fish, poultry, and dairy industries.

Additionally, it is available with fully unprinted or with a printed top film. The top film is offered with traditional and HD flexographic or rotogravure print, with options for matt, gloss, and tactile lacquer finishes.

This offers a visually appealing on-shelf presentation, and the dissemination of product information for consumer appeal, the protective packaging maker said.

Coveris CEO Christian Kolarik said: “The development of MonoFlex Thermoform is a significant development from the Coveris Group.

“Manufactured across multiple locations supporting our vision for No Waste, our monomaterial, recyclable MonoFlex Thermoform films are a direct replacement for non-recyclable alternatives currently used.

“The launch of this material enables a significant amount of plastic packaging to be captured through recycling processes, achieving environmental benefits including carbon footprint reduction and the re-direction of materials away from landfill.”
