The new packaging eliminates polystyrene, ensuring medication safety and quality for consumers, OptumRx stated.

The sustainable packaging is said to deliver temperature-sensitive specialty and maintenance prescriptions to consumers’ homes, in addition to preserving the safety and quality of the medication remain intact.

OptumRx is avoiding the commonly used foam in medication home delivery, as part of its efforts to ensure all packaging used in its home delivery facilities is recyclable.

The company has developed new packaging by using renewable cotton. It is also completely biodegradable, compostable, reusable and recyclable.

OptumRx will use the new packaging to deliver around four million prescriptions per annum, and it will enable the company to curb around two million pounds of carbon dioxide, and save 17 million gallons of water and four million kilowatt hours of energy.

According to the company, most of the medicines such as specialty prescriptions need to be preserved within strict temperature ranges to safely reach their destinations without any damages.

OptumRx operations chief Jon Mahrt said: “At OptumRx, our priority is ensuring people get the high-quality medications they need, when they need them.

“Our new packaging ensures each shipment maintains the highest standard of quality and effectiveness, while reducing the environmental footprint of our medication home delivery services.”
