Glass bottles and jars producer O-I Glass has rolled out its new lightweight glass wine bottle with a reduced carbon footprint in the French market.

The bottle, named Estampe, weighs about 390g and is way below the average weight of typical wine bottles in France.

According to O-I Glass, the bottle emits around 25% less carbon emissions in comparison to conventional 500g wine bottles.

Estampe was developed using high recycled content, up to 80% or more on average, which is significantly higher than the current European average of 50% recycled content, the glass bottle maker said.

The 75cl bottle’s credibility and overall sustainability were validated by the Carbon Trust. O-I worked with the company to achieve its criteria for low-carbon packaging.

O-I Glass chief sales and marketing officer Arnaud Aujouannet said: “Our customers and consumers alike continue to seek sustainable packaging solutions. The addition of a lower carbon lightweight bottle that’s validated by the Carbon Trust demonstrates how we’re innovating to create brand-building, iconic, sustainable solutions.

“O-I has been innovating glass bottles for more than a century, and as the demand for lightweight, lower impact packaging rises, we’re focused on transforming our processes and technology to meet that need without compromising on design.”

The lightweight glass wine bottle aligns with O-I’s pursuit of its approved SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative) target to lower greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030.

Estampe is intended to be aesthetically pleasing, useful, sustainable, and well-balanced. It complements the variety of lighter-weight glass bottles that O-I now offers throughout its global portfolio.

The company has created lightweight wine bottles to satisfy consumer requests for less visual effects while preserving the flavour and pleasure of the wine.

Headquartered in Perrysburg, Ohio, US, O-I Glass is the preferred partner for several food and beverage brands. It has around 68 plants in 19 countries.
