Discount supermarket chain Aldi has introduced its own-brand flat, lightweight, recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) wine bottles in the UK.

Aldi will roll out its Chapter & Verse Shiraz and Chapter & Verse Chardonnay wines in the new fully recyclable PET bottles across all its stores in the region.

The new flat bottles are entirely made from rPET and weigh 63g, making them approximately seven times stronger and lighter than a typical glass bottle, the retailer claimed.

Additionally, the wine bottles are said to be completely shatterproof, making them suitable for outdoor events like BBQs and picnics.

The launch of the bottles is also anticipated to lighten the load on bulky shopping baskets by eliminating 42 tonnes of bottle weight.

Furthermore, the use of new, compact bottles instead of normal round glass allows 30% more bottles that can be put in pallets and delivered to supermarkets.

This results in 30% fewer vehicles for transportation, the supermarket chain said.

The design also allows the shoppers to stack and organise bottles in their homes easily and optimise storage space without compromising the volume of a traditional wine bottle.

Aldi UK buying managing director Julie Ashfield said: “We know shoppers are looking for greener, more sustainable products and our aim is to continue to deliver this, whilst offering great value and enhanced functionality.

“We’re pleased to be taking the next step in expanding our recyclable, eco-friendly range.”

The retailer has collaborated with Packamama on this initiative. Based in the UK, Packamama offers climate-friendly packaging solutions for the drinks sector.

Aldi also introduced its Chassaux et Fils Méditerranée Rosé wine in a recyclable PET bottle. The bottle is said to be eight times lighter than the average 75cl glass bottle and will remove an additional 18.15t of bottle weight.

The supermarket chain also aims to lower the average bottle weight of all its still wine products by 8% by 2025.
