Packaging and paper firm Mondi has partnered with building materials supplier Baumit to introduce water-soluble SolmixBag for the construction industry.

SolmixBag is a paper packaging solution designed to store and transport dry construction materials such as cement and dry mix mortar products.

According to Mondi, the solution is created to dissolve when getting in touch with water during the mixing process. During mixing, the fibre of the packaging integrates with the product.

This can avoid waste, lowers the cost of managing paper waste, and minimises dust on the construction site as the bag can be simply placed into the mixer without opening it.

Mondi has worked closely with its long-standing customer Baumit to develop and launch SolmixBag in the global construction market.

Baumit Dry Mix Mortar R&D head Peter Weißmann said: “Working closely with Mondi means we have been able to test and trial these bags thoroughly and the results will soon benefit new product groups.

“The impacts on sustainability are vast. Our customers on building sites love the new technology due to the multiple benefits – no waste and reduced dust as the two most important.”

Designed in-house using the firm’s integrated value chain, SolmixBag is made from Mondi’s water-soluble one-ply sack kraft paper that uses 20% less paper than the industry standard 2-ply paper bags.

The paper and packaging firm said that the product is available in conventional sizes and can be used with existing filling equipment, allowing customers to seamlessly switch from their current solutions.

The SolmixBag offers the same strength, shelf life and product protection as its predecessors and produces good printing results for a premium, noticeable shelf look, Mondi claimed.

Mondi International Key Account manager Ferdinand Muck said: “We are closely collaborating with our partners in the building material industry to eliminate waste disposal and dust, which benefits both the environment and the workers on site.

“The launch of SolmixBag with Baumit is an important step to make a real difference to the sustainability of the whole industry.”
