Paper and packaging firm Mondi has partnered with packaging machinery maker Syntegon to develop a recyclable paper packaging solution using recycled fibres for dry food products.

Under the partnership, Mondi will supply its ISEGA-approved EcoVantage kraft paper roll stock to Syntegon, which will then apply spot coating to make a dust-tight, heat-sealable packaging for dried foods such as flour, sugar, and pasta.

Mondi said the packaging removes contamination across the entire product lifecycle from production to the consumer’s home.

Syntegon’s technology limits the amount of the sealing agent and ensures the protection of powdered food goods and packaging strength, which is recyclable in prevailing paper streams, as proven by Mondi’s Recycling Lab.

Mondi Flexible Packaging R&D and Intellectual Property head Elisabeth Schwaiger said: “Thanks to the close partnership with Syntegon and our extensive technical expertise and knowledge of paper, we can support our customers in making more sustainable choices.

“With high recycling rates of paper and the use of wood as a renewable material, we are delivering a packaging innovation that embraces resource efficiency, waste reduction and recyclability.”

EcoVantage is said to be made from recycled and ethically sourced fresh fibres. It was previously used for paper shopping bags.

According to the packaging firm, the latest packaging marks the first time EcoVantage kraft paper is used on dry food packaging.

The paper is also approved by ISEGA for use in the entire food packaging sector.

The development of these new packaging solutions aligns with Mondi’s MAP2030 targets.

Syntegon sustainability director Torsten Sauer said: “It is our goal to create sustainable packaging solutions with the minimum environmental impact possible.

“With paper packaging that is both recyclable and containing recycled material, we are making a big step towards closing the circularity loop for primary food packaging.”

Recently, the packaging firm terminated its $1.17bn agreement to sell its Syktyvkar paper mill in Russia to Augment Investments.
