The awards, set up over 20 years ago, showcased the most innovative carton board products both in terms of sustainability and branding opportunities.

The use of Modified Atmosphere (MA) technology in RAP’s RapTray gained the plaudits, with judges commenting on its “lightweight” material, its ability to “hold ready meals totally hygienically” and offer of “carton material that means replacing plastic food containers.”

The MA RapTray is the world’s first modified atmosphere carton tray and is able to seal in freshness and extend product shelf life for up to 28 days.

Furthermore, it is 20% lighter than plastic versions and reduces oil-based plastics by up to 85%.

Graham Williams, chief executive of RAP, said: “As Europe’s most prestigious awards for cartonboard packaging, the European Carton Excellence Awards represent RAP’s ambition to make a positive impact on the packaging of the future.

“This is recognition of our technologists’ work, and our unwavering goal to lead on sustainability and to set the agenda in the food-to-go packaging industry. We look forward to continuing the success we have had in 2018 by getting to work on our next groundbreaking products.”
