Honest Crust is based in Melton Mowbray, a town in Leicestershire, England. Honest Crust food is now available to purchase in hospitals and universities nationwide.

The plastic-free sandwich skillet has been launched in Honest Crust’s recyclable and zero-plastic packaging range for sandwiches and wraps.

Coveris developed the new packaging as part of its Pack Positive commitment focused on enhancing resource efficiency, recyclability and food waste reduction in line with UK Plastics Pact and Courtauld 2025 targets.

Traditional OPP plastic with Natureflex cellulose film derived from FSC/PEFC sources is replaced with the new packaging, which is compatible with its scientifically developed Freshlife technology that maintains shelf-life and freshness for longer, helping to decrease food waste.

Samworth Brothers brand development manager Alastair Johns said: “We’re delighted to be first to market with Coveris’ Pack Positive plastic-free sandwich packaging and have already received lots of positive comments from our customers and consumers.

“A key pillar within the Honest Crust brand is to ensure we’re always conscious of the environment in which we operate and packaging is very much a key focus area for us.”

Coveris said offering a solution to the limitations of existing food on the move waste and recycling streams, plastic-free skillets are recyclable where plants exist or break down significantly quicker in landfill than OPP alternatives due to the use of EN13432 certified compostable cellulose film.

Coveris’ Food-to-go sales director Michael Conway said: “We are committed to delivering sustainable and environmentally responsible packaging for the food-to-go sector and look forward to continuing to support Honest Crust, as well as other strategic partners within the market to launch further packaging solutions which support a circular and sustainable economy.”

Coveris has recently unveiled RecyclaPEel made from fully recyclable materials. The hybrid cup is claimed to deliver a 70% reduction in plastic and a Rightweight range engineered to provide like-for-like protection and freshness benefits, with an entire weight reduction of 10%.
