Austrian acting plastics manufacturer ALPLA has expanded its manufacturing technology for OTC bottles with the addition of flexible extrusion blow moulding (EBM).

The new flexible EBM technology enables the container walls’ thickness to be adjusted according to the type and consistency of the contents.

It will help create sustainable and customer-specific packaging solutions in the over-the-counter (OTC) pharma products sector.

EBM technology also creates increased the sealing surface at the neck opening, which eventually increases leak tightness.

According to the firm, it also provides the option of combining different thin-walled layers with product-specific oxygen barriers.

ALPLApharma, a system supplier, will also provide the ideal caps for its OTC bottles which include CRC justONE, a special screw cap with a tamper-evident band that is created using just one injection moulding process.

ALPLA’s ALPLApharma managing director Walter Knes said: “The market for OTC containers is becoming more and more important for us. In the USA in particular, what’s known as the pill container market is now huge.

“At the same time, the customers’ requirements regarding sustainable, weight-reduced and cost-effective containers have increased around the world, which is why we are expanding both our technological and commercial scope with EBM and are in a position to cater to a wider array of requests.”

Till now, ALPLA has been offering injection blow moulding (IBM) technology for container production capacities.

In July this year, the company acquired Polish company APON to expand the footprint of its pharma division in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE).
