Toppan, a provider of packaging and décor materials, has developed a new barrier-coated paper for packaging applications.

With high water vapour barrier performance and better flex resistance, the new GL-X-P barrier coated paper is designed for a wide range of contents and packaging shapes.

In September, the company will commence the sample shipments of GL-X-P barrier coated paper to manufacturers in different industries such as food and toiletries. It plans to begin full-scale sales in spring next year.

GL-X-P’s water vapour barrier performance enables to prevent content quality deterioration caused by humidity ad its flex resistance helps to create a diverse variety of packaging shapes.

The features facilitate the use of barrier-coated paper in the packaging of a range of powdered and solid contents, including food products such as instant coffee, powdered soups, and chocolate as well as cosmetics and toiletries.

GL-X-P, which is an alternative to conventional packaging using paper, will help minimise food loss due to the potential extension of shelf lives enabled by the preservation of freshness.

Toppan said: “Because GL-X-P itself is heat sealable, a structure consisting only of paper is possible, cutting plastic consumption and facilitating a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to approximately 35% (Toppan calculation) when used as an alternative to conventional laminated packaging structures that include plastic.”

GL-X-P is said to further expand the applications of GL BARRIER, as well as address the challenge of producing paper-based high barrier packaging.

Toppan is also planning to advance the development of GL-X-P and optimise its products portfolio by creating new barrier-coated paper products for packaging.

The company will exhibit the GL-X-P barrier coated paper at Pack Expo Las Vegas, which will be held from 27 September to 29 September.

It will also be exhibited at the Toppan Europe booth at FACHPACK, which will be held from 28 September to 30 September.

In September 2019, Toppan collaborated with packaging firm Amcor to provide NFC tag-enabled anti-counterfeiting solution for the wine and spirits markets.
