UK-based sustainable packaging and paper company Mondi has unveiled its plans to upgrade its Dynäs pulp and paper mill in Sweden.

Under the project, Mondi will install and upgrade the machinery and equipment like the latest bark boiler and cooking plant to enhance the mill’s energy efficiency.

The modernisation programme is expected to boost efficiency and further improve the overall environmental performance of the mill.

The upgrade will also minimise air and water emissions for better wood utilisation at the mill, the packaging firm said.

According to Mondi, the move will position the firm to continue satisfying customer demand for sustainable paper and paper-based packaging solutions.

The Dynäs pulp and paper mill manufactures sack and speciality kraft papers for a range of paper-based packaging solutions for industrial and consumer sectors. It is said to be an important element of Mondi’s Flexible Packaging arm.

Mondi Kraft Paper COO Roman Senecky said: “The modernisation programme at Dynäs represents a significant investment in the future of this well-established mill.

“By producing sustainable sack and speciality kraft paper, we continue to contribute to our MAP2030 goals and meet customer demand with innovative solutions such as Advantage StretchWrap, an alternative to plastic film pallet wrapping, and Advantage MF EcoComp, used for high-strength packaging like paper bags for wet organic household waste.

“The mill supplies paper across Europe and plays an important role in the local community.”

Mondi’s works application for the modernisation programme is already cleared by the Swedish Land and Environmental Court (Mark-och Miljödomstolen) in March last year.

Construction is anticipated to complete by December 2026, said the firm.

Recently, Mondi launched a new paperbag solution called Protector Bag ExpandForm, which comes with an expandable feature to rollpack mattresses.

The Protector Bag ExpandForm is intended to replace the plastic packaging that is presently utilised with a reusable and flexible alternative.
