Packaging and paper group Mondi has created a new paperbag solution called Protector Bag ExpandForm, which comes with an expandable feature to rollpack mattresses.

According to Mondi, Protector Bag ExpandForm replaces the plastic packaging that is currently used with a reusable and flexible alternative. The paperbag solution can also be customised and expanded to various sizes while still securing the mattress in place.

Made with Mondi’s Kraft paper, the paperbag packaging can be recycled, thus contributing to a circular economy. As it is made from renewable materials, the packaging is easy to dispose of and recycle in currently available paper waste streams.

The Protector Bag ExpandForm paper bag is resistant to puncture and is suitable for printing, which means that brands can customise their packages with a top-quality appearance.

In contrast to plastic packaging, paper layers are breathable and emit gases which evaporate quickly with the new packaging, said Mondi.

Mondi paper bags sales director Fabio Barbieri said: “Consumers are actively seeking packaging that is responsibly sourced and easy to recycle. This new solution ticks both boxes: it is easier to open and to dispose compared to large rolls of plastic and avoidable packaging used previously.

“Protector Bag ExpandForm needs no secondary packaging to protect the product and will be stable throughout the whole delivery journey.”

Megaflex Schaumstoff, a manufacturer of flexible foams as well as mattresses and other sleeping products, is the first company to implement the new packaging.

The company worked together with Mondi and machine maker FillMatic to make sure that the switch to the new type of packaging was smooth with only a few adaptations made to its plastic rollpacking machinery.

In the future, Megaflex Schaumstoff intends to substitute the entire range of plastic rollpacking with paper by the end of this year by using the Protection Bag ExpandForm solution.

Mondi will showcase the ExpandForm Protector Bag as well as other innovative products that cater to the mattresses, bedding, and upholstery industry at this month’s interzum trade fair in Cologne, Germany.

Last month, Mondi said that it invested in new technologies to boost the FunctionalBarrier Paper capacity to meet the growing demand for sustainable paper-based packaging solutions.
