Packaging and paper firm Mondi has partnered with consumer goods company Reckitt to design a new paper-based packaging for the latter’s Finish dishwasher tablets.

Using Mondi’s EcoSolutions approach, both firms have developed a sustainable solution. The new Finish packaging has successfully replaced 75% of the plastic with paper that was sustainably sourced.

Mondi said that the remaining plastic is utilised to reinforce the paper structure, create barrier protection that ensures Finish product’s quality and safety, and create a seal that can be closed again.

Reckitt chief research & development officer Angela Naef said: “Removing plastic from our products is a priority across all Reckitt’s brands.

“We are always looking at new and innovative ways to improve sustainability in our packaging and we are committed to pioneering further packaging innovation. One of Reckitt’s sustainability ambitions is to reduce virgin plastic in our packaging by half by 2030.”

The improved recycling capabilities and lower production costs of the new packaging are anticipated to emit 15% less CO2 during its entire lifecycle than earlier versions.

The new paper-based Finish packaging will initially only be sold at Carrefour in France, where it can be recycled in the country’s current paper recycling systems.

Any modifications that are necessary after the initial market launch will be made before the product is introduced in other nations during the following few years, Mondi added.

The paper packaging firm claimed that Reckitt will stop using more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic annually upon completion of the launch, which is the equivalent of 50 million 1-litre bottles.

Mondi Global Key Accounts head Olivier Seux said: With Reckitt, we were able to develop a paper-based packaging solution that reduces plastic usage while still providing the necessary product protection.

“This project is a great example of Mondi’s approach of using paper where possible, plastic when useful. The packaging has been designed with sustainability in mind to minimise the impact on the environment.”
