International Paper, a US-based renewable fibre-based packaging products supplier, has announced an investment of €10m at its manufacturing facilities in Morocco.

The company said that the investment to be made this year is in response to the rise in demand for corrugated packaging products in Morocco.

Recently, International Paper exceeded an annual production volume of 50 million m² at its Tangier box plant for the first time since the acquisition of the facility in 2017.

International Paper stated that it will earmark €6.5m to procure new equipment at the Tangier site to enhance the box making capacity and capabilities.

The investment at the Tangier site is expected to strengthen the company’s position in the fresh fruit & vegetable (F&V) and the automotive segments.

Furthermore, the investment will help increase the production capacity for high-quality printed F&V trays at the Tangier plant by an estimated 55 million units per annum.

The firm said that the Tangier facility can manufacture large American boxes, which will be used by customers in the automotive sector.

International Paper Morocco & West Africa regional general manager Bertrand Laplaud said: “Our customers and end-users want products that contribute to a more sustainable, low-carbon future.

“Corrugated packaging is best suited to respond to this demand and our investments will make more sustainably made packaging products that people depend on every day available in Morocco, contributing to the circular economy.”

International Paper will invest about €3.5m to install a new multi-fuel boiler at Kenitra recycled containerboard mill to advance energy efficiency.

The company will also undertake a feasibility study for implementing other alternative energy options, such as solar energy, at the mill.

Based in Memphis, Tennessee, International Paper produces corrugated packaging products that protect and promote goods and facilitate global commerce.

It has manufacturing operations in North America, Latin America, Europe, and North Africa.
