Origin Materials, a carbon-negative materials company, has unveiled its sustainable carbonated soft drink (CSD) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) cap.

The cap is said to be the world’s lightest CSD cap compatible with the PCO 1881 neck finish.

It is also the first of its kind to be commercialised with 100% PET and can be produced with either virgin or recycled PET (rPET).

Origin Materials’s latest offering is designed to improve recycling circularity, allow mono-material containers, and lighter packaging, and boost product shelf life.

It results from Origin Materials’ all-PET caps and closures manufacturing breakthrough.

The materials company claimed that the 1881 closure has a lightweight design with superior performance.

Its PET material offers enhanced mechanical properties compared to conventional cap materials like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP).

Origin Materials said that the cap’s design requires less plastic to achieve optimal performance.

Additionally, the design incorporates tamper evidence, providing users with a particularly gratifying experience, from its tactile feel to the satisfying sound it makes upon opening.

Origin co-founder and co-CEO John Bissell said: “There are hundreds of different kinds of caps and closures in container packaging. But the PCO 1881 neck finish is considered a leading standard for carbonated soft drinks and is often used for other products such as juices or even still or sparkling water.

“Because of the ubiquity of bottles using the PCO 1881 finish, it’s an area where our 100% PET cap can make a tremendous difference by improving recycling circularity and product performance in a massive market.

“Our innovation in the design and manufacturing of PET closures, including closures made with recycled PET, has enabled us to pursue solutions previously thought to be impossible, and an 1881 compatible CSD PET cap is certainly one of them.”

Origin Materials said its high-throughput production system will introduce the latest PET caps and closures on a commercial scale in Q4 2024.

The carbon-negative materials firm aims to support the world’s transition towards sustainable materials.
