Carbon-negative materials company Origin Materials has developed sustainable PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle caps to enable “all PET mono-material” bottle and cap solutions.
The new PET bottle caps will allow the development of 100% recycled PET possible from cap to bottle to enhance post-consumer recycling.
Origin’s PET caps are said to be more sustainable than other alternatives as they can be developed from any PET type including recycled PET to Origin’s 100% bio-based, carbon-negative virgin PET.
According to the carbon-negative materials company, PET provides more oxygen and CO2 barrier than high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP), common cap materials.
Origin’s patent-pending, design and production techniques support the development of mono-material items.
Made from a single type of material, the products are generally easy to recycle in comparison to products made from multiple materials. They are also in demand for consumer packaged goods to increase recycling.
Origin Materials co-founder and co-CEO John Bissell said: “We identified a global sustainability challenge and an opportunity to solve it. An all-PET bottle and cap and closure system is an obvious, necessary next step in beverage packaging and recycling.

Cap tethering mandates, designed to support the recoverability and recyclability of bottles, could further boost interest in Origin’s caps and closures, the materials company said.
Origin’s PET caps do not need to be detached from their tethered containers and can therefore be recycled simply and easily.
