Sustainable packaging solutions provider DS Smith has extended the corrugated packaging supply agreement with global confectionery and snack company Mondelēz International.

DS Smith has signed the second consecutive five-year agreement to become the sole supplier of corrugated packaging for Mondelēz across European markets.

The agreement is an expansion of current services and will now focus on collaboration for new initiatives.

It will include strengthening the partnership that has been in place for the previous 10 years between DS Smith and Mondelēz, which owns global and local brands like Oreo, Belvita biscuits, 7Days baked snacks, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Milka, and Toblerone chocolate.

The partnership will allow the companies to produce customised sustainable packaging solutions through a radical joint innovation roadmap while advancing their research and development (R&D) programmes.

Additionally, the partnership focuses on quality, supply chain efficiency, and productivity initiatives, DS Smith said. This involves maintaining resilient supply chains and ensuring product availability, irrespective of market conditions.

DS Smith Packaging Division CEO Stefano Rossi said: “We are delighted to continue this amazing journey with our hugely valued customer, Mondelēz International. This long-standing partnership is a testament to the strength of our shared vision together.

“We are uniquely focussed on redefining packaging for a changing world and in creating lasting packaging innovations across all areas of our customer’s business.”

Both companies will collaborate closely to limit the use of single-use plastics and adopt new fibre-based sustainable packaging solutions throughout European markets to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

When co-creating new packaging innovations, the packaging solutions provider and Mondelez will continue to employ the DS Smith Circular Design Metrics.

The tool ensures that each new solution is assessed for important sustainability metrics like recyclability, material consumption, prolonging the life of materials and products, and improving the efficiency of entire supply cycles.

Mondelēz International Procurement Europe vice president Cyril Goyet said: “We are tremendously excited about our next venture with DS Smith and grateful for the collaborative journey that we have shared over the last ten years.

“The mutual trust we have built over time and the transparency and dedication exhibited by both teams has been the secret recipe of our success, enabling consistent value delivery and making our partnership unique and remarkable.”
