US-based technology company HP has acquired plastic-free packaging development company Choose Packaging for an undisclosed sum.

Choose Packaging is claimed to be the inventor of the only commercially available zero-plastic paper bottle in the world.

Designed to serve as an alternative to plastic bottles, the company’s patented technology holds the potential to carry a variety of liquid products.

Choose Packaging produces its paper-based bottles using naturally occurring and non-toxic materials.

The packaging company works with major global companies such as wine company Accolade Wines, consumer and industrial goods company Henkel and Pernod Ricard’s global brand Malibu Rum.

Choose Packaging founder and managing director James Longcroft said: “HP’s world-class capabilities and expertise can help scale our impact at a global level.

“We are thrilled to join the HP team and couldn’t have chosen a better match in terms of our shared goals for business, technology, sustainability, and a values-oriented culture.”

HP, which is focused on the disruption of the $10bn fibre-based sustainable packaging market, has already launched the 3D printing-enabled moulded fibre tooling solution to develop customisable fibre-based products.

The tech firm intends to integrate Choose Packaging in its personalisation and 3D printing business to scale its technology and customer footprint for the expansion of the addressable market.

HP chief strategy and incubation officer Dr Savi Baveja said: “This acquisition is a great example of how we continue to strengthen our capabilities in attractive verticals like sustainable packaging while also driving progress against HP’s broader sustainability goals.

“Choose has built a truly differentiated technology and we are excited to welcome this talented team to the HP family.”

In August last year, HP launched new PageWide corrugated innovations to boost the production of digitally printed packaging applications.
