Berry Global Healthcare has unveiled a new lightweight, breath-actuated, multi-dose inhaler, PneumoHaler, for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management.

The PneumoHaler is a ready-to-use solution for novel inhalation treatments.

It is designed to eliminate the need for pharmaceutical firms to create their own platforms, allowing for the delivery of faster-to-market solutions.

The PneumoHaler improves medication adherence that is often compromised by improper pressurised metered dosage inhaler (pMDI) use.

According to Berry, the PneumoHaler breath-actuated inhaler (BAI) eliminates the possibility of a coordination error by not requiring canister pressing during inhalation, in contrast to pMDIs.

The inhaler also has a valve actuation system which releases the medication dose only once the patient reaches the proper inhalation airflow value.

This ensures that the right dose is administered each time, maximising the effectiveness of the medication, Berry said.

Furthermore, the PneumoHaler boasts an elegant ergonomic grip for user comfort and an inbuilt dose indication that lets users keep an eye on their medication intake.

The mechanical system of the multi-dose inhaler only activates when the patient opens the mouthpiece cap for inhalation, in contrast to other modern BAIs.

This implies that the device doesn’t experience tension during its whole shelf life, greatly lowering wear and tear and extending its lifespan and dependability, the American healthcare products maker said.

Additionally, the inhaler has an adaptive spring mechanism that allows for a greater tolerance range to be used for crimping height changes in the canister without sacrificing overall performance.

Some other features include adjustable orifice diameter, jet length, and sump volume, as well as its adaptability to a range of valves and canisters.

It also has a variety of printing and labelling options for clear communication of important instructions and data along with the option for personal branding.

Berry Healthcare global sales director Alan Quemeneur said: “The PneumoHaler has been designed primarily with patient ease in mind, removing the complexity of hand-breath coordination to offer a simplified yet highly effective inhalation experience for asthma and COPD patients.

“Equally important, it is readily available and easy to adapt to individual drug requirements, offering pharmaceutical companies speed-to-market.”
