Austrian packaging solutions firm Alpla and Switzerland-based Fromm have agreed to collaborate for PET recycling in Germany.

Alpla said that the collaboration enables complete recycling of PET plastics as the two firms operate recycling plants for PET bottles. This also ensures the necessary supply of materials for their own production facilities.

The collaboration aims is the further optimize the high recycling rates for PET as well as a significantly reduce CO2 emissions through saved transport.

Alpla corporate recycling services head Georg Lässer said: “The requirements at our production sites complement one another very well. At ALPLA, we mainly need clear, food-grade pellets. Fromm processes coloured flakes for the strapping bands.

“The collaboration between our recycling facilities will ensure the necessary quantity and quality of materials for production for both sides.”

Alpla noted that there are further benefits for the partners including simplified access to markets in the respective countries.

Fromm Group owner Reinhard Fromm said: “The three recycling plants are integrated in various procurement markets and complement one another ideally in the procurement of raw materials.”

Alpla has PET Recycling plants in Wöllersdorf, Austria and Radomsko, Poland. The facilities are equipped to have an annual capacity of approximately 45,000 tons of food-grade rPET produced from post-consumer materials.

Fromm Plastics’ subsidiary PET recycling company Texplast in Germany is engaged in production of PET pellets and PET flakes.

The products are used by FROMM for its own production of strapping bands. It also supplies manufacturers of beverage bottles, thermoforming sheets and fibres.

Employing 19,300 people, Alpla is engaged in producing custom-made packaging systems, bottles, closures and moulded parts at 176 facilities located across 45 countries.

The firm’s packaging is used in a wide range of areas, including for food and drinks, cosmetics and care products, household detergents, washing and cleaning agents, engine oils and lubricants.

Employing over 1,200 people, Fromm Group develops, produces and distributes tailored packaging solutions for customers with around 40 companies. It operates production sites in Italy, Germany, US, Thailand, Chile and Slovakia.
