The ALPLA Group and its subsidiary ALPLApharma have established a joint venture (JV) with Spanish packaging company Inden Pharma to bolster their footprint in the pharmaceutical packaging market.

Under the long-term partnership, ALPLA, a plastic packaging and recycling firm, and Inden Pharma will start a certified production of bottles, containers, and closures in clean rooms.

The JV consists of two ALPLApharma production sites in Greece (Koropi) and Poland (Żyrardów) and the two Spanish plants of Inden Pharma in Ibi, north of Alicante.

It also includes a fifth plant that was jointly constructed in Germany (Markdorf) and is expected to start operations in June this year.

ALPLA CEO Philipp Lehner said: “We combine global presence with high standards and technology leadership.

“Together, we are even closer to our customers and are expanding our range of high-quality, cost-effective and sustainable packaging solutions.”

In the first year, the five facilities will work together to generate about 800 million packing items, the packaging and recycling firm said.

The standard items provided by Inden Pharma will be incorporated into the combined ALPLApharma and Inden Pharma product catalogue, bringing the total number of items available to more than 150.

According to the ALPLA, the JV will extend its business to locations outside of Europe, such as India, the US or Central and South America in the future.

Inden Pharma owner and CEO Juan Guillem González said: “Our international customers benefit from a greater variety of plants, proximity, high flexibility as well as the service and quality in deliveries that has been habitual in recent years.

“It is quite a challenge, not only for Inden Pharma, but for the entire organisation of the joint venture, since our objective is to achieve leadership in the pharmaceutical plastic packaging market in the next five years.”

Last month, ALPLA Group inaugurated its first polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling plant in Romania with its joint venture partners.
