Spanish petrochemical company Repsol has rolled out its new range of lubricant containers that contain 60% mechanically recycled post-consumer plastic.

The new Repsol Reciclex high-density polyethylene (HDPE) ready-to-use compound will be used on all 1l, 4l, and 5l lubricant containers in five colours. It is mechanically recycled from Repsol’s Reciclex series of sustainable polyolefins.

The petrochemical company said that the containers will be used for various product ranges, including engine and transmission lubricants for automobiles, motorcycles, and heavy vehicles.

Repsol polyethylene director Pablo Giner said: “We are delighted to present this new solution, which will help reduce the carbon footprint by 25% compared to previous packaging.

“Our Reciclex team has been working to develop a packaging solution that incorporates recycled materials and meets our company’s high durability and performance standards.”

Repsol intends to lower its carbon footprint and promote a circular economy using recycled materials. The new packaging has been created to enhance sustainability while retaining its qualities.

The multi-energy firm anticipates lowering its carbon footprint by 25% using these new containers compared to its previous design. The recycled content makes up 60% of the package’s overall weight.

Through these products, Repsol said that it is demonstrating its commitment to increased sustainability across the whole value chain, marketing innovative and eco-friendly solutions.

Repsol lubricants, aviation, asphalt, and specialities director Sebastián Mussini said: “This initiative complements our sustainability strategy, complementing our carbon footprint neutral Master lubricant range we have recently released.”

Last year, the petrochemical firm unveiled plans to invest €26m in a new production line for recycled plastics at its Puertollano Industrial Complex in Spain. The site is expected to produce 25,000 tons of recycled plastic annually.

It will also help Repsol to create plastics for rigid and flexible packaging for non-food use such as product packaging sacks and cleaning product containers.
