Paper and packaging solutions provider WestRock Company has provided its Cluster-Pak EvoTech packaging solution for a joint partnership between Budějovický Budvar and Mattoni 1873.

The new flexible and efficient Cluster-Pak EvoTech is intended to advance the shared commitment of both firms to improve circularity in the Czech Republic beverage industry.

The solution has been implemented to package BIRGO, a non-alcoholic beer created by Mattoni in collaboration with Budjovick Budvar, an exporter of craft beer from the Czech Republic and the sole manufacturer of BIRGO.

With Cluster-Pak EvoTech, high-speed lines can operate more efficiently in terms of energy and operational costs.

The technology has easy, repeatable changeovers along with optimised use of water, heat and electricity to enhance both energy and operating efficiencies on high-speed lines.

Cluster-Pak EvoTech’s use of recyclable fibre-based packaging made from materials supplied from ethically managed forests is key to establishing the circularity on the BIRGO production line.

WestRock Consumer Packaging president Patrick Kivits said: “At WestRock, we are driving sustainability by working with customers to develop and implement eco-friendly packaging and machinery solutions that help them to advance their sustainability goals.

“Introducing our Cluster-Pak EvoTech solution to the Czech Republic beverage industry is an exciting example of our efforts.

“We look forward to helping Mattoni and its partners continue to further their sustainability goals.”

The packaging solution is being used on a brand-new, advanced production line that can produce up to 50,000 cans per hour.

Budějovický Budvar CEO Petr Dvořák said: “We are excited about our new collaboration with Mattoni, not only because of the excellent product, but also because we share the same values.

“We are proud to be one of the first in the Czech Republic using fibre-based packaging for canned products. We expect to save 85 tons of plastic per year.

“Our partnership with WestRock advances our goals by putting circular principles into practice.”

In April this year, WestRock announced its collaboration with Recipe Unlimited to implement a range of recyclable paperboard packaging.
