Finland-based Valmet has secured a new order for a new recovery boiler and an upgrade of the existing evaporation system for DS Smith’s Viana pulp and paper mill in Portugal.

Under the order, Valmet will deliver the new recovery boiler delivery along with a high-power recovery boiler, related emission control systems and non-condensable gas (NCG) handling, all with extended scope of delivery.

The Finnish company said that the high power of the recovery boiler increases the steam and energy efficiency of the mill.

The emission control solutions consist of Valmet Electrostatic Precipitator that ensures dust removal and low emissions effectively.

Valmet said that the recovery boiler will be controlled by its DNA automation system and includes Valmet’s advanced process controls and operator training simulator.

The firm will provide Valmet Tubel and Tube technology in a six-effect configuration to upgrade the evaporation system while ensuring maximum availability and mechanical dependability.

Additionally, the upgrade adds 10,100m² to the heating area. The procedure is designed to produce clean condensate.

DS Smith Paper & Recycling head Niels Flierman said: “Our paper-making operations across Europe and North America are focused on providing the paper needed to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging.

“As one of our larger mills, Viana has a huge role to play in our commitment to remain at the forefront of the market, and to lead the way in the race to net zero in the paper industry.”

The start of the delivery projects is anticipated in the first half of 2025.

The purchase was one of the orders Valmet received in the first quarter of 2023, with no information about the order’s value.

The delivery of pulp technology is part of DS Smith’s investment programme to modernise the Viana mill with modern equipment for lowering CO2 emissions.

Valmet Recovery, Pulp and Energy VP Jussi Mäntyniemi said: “Our delivery for the chemical recovery island of the DS Smith Viana mill enables the mill to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions and improve the availability of the whole pulp production process.

“The recovery boiler and evaporation projects are a continuation of the lime kiln upgrade project started last year.”
