Japan-based textile company Toyobo has announced that it will open a new polyester film packaging facility at Pt. Trias Toyobo Astria (TTA) in Indonesia.
TTA is a joint venture between Toyobo and Indonesian film producer Pt. Trias Sentosa, Tbk to meet the rise in demand for sustainable film goods.
The facility, which will entail an investment of JPY10bn ($72m), will help double TTA’s production capacity.
Toyobo intends to begin construction of the plant in spring 2024 and start operations by the end of 2025.
TTA was founded in 2017 to expedite Toyobo’s packaging film business’s international expansion which started producing in the early months of 2020.
TTA supplies a variety of polyester film products including base films for ECOSYAR, a vapour-deposited film with exceptional barrier performance to Toyobo, Trias, and Pt. Toyobo Trias Ecosyar.
Toyobo Group said that its overall capacity to create polyester films will be increased by the addition of a new manufacturing plant at TTA despite rising global awareness of environmental issues.
The new facility will help the group to meet the demand for environmentally-friendly film products around the world.
The products include SPACECLEAN, a thin shrinkable film that aids in reducing the number of packaging materials, films created from biomass or recycled materials, and films for laminating steel sheets that aid in minimising the environmental effects of the production of canned goods.
Toyobo Group announced a target to increase the percentage of green films to 60% in the fiscal year ending in March 2031 and to 100% in the fiscal year ending in March 2051 in its Sustainable Vision 2030, a long-term vision unveiled on 26 May 2022.
The company is dedicated to achieving a circular economy by expanding the global distribution of its eco-friendly film products.
In February 2021, Toyobo announced the launch of a new biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film, dubbed DP065, for mono-material packaging applications.
