Paper-based packaging solutions provider Smurfit Kappa is set to invest more than $33m to expand its Fortaleza facility in Brazil.

The Fortaleza facility expansion will be carried out to meet the increasing demand from the customers for the company’s sustainable packaging solutions.

As part of the expansion, the company will install a new corrugator to significantly boost the facility’s shelf ready packaging capability for FMCG customers in different sectors such as fresh fruit, home appliances and pharmaceuticals.

Smurfit Kappa Brazil CEO Manuel Alcalá said: “Today’s announcement will ensure Smurfit Kappa can support our customers to gain even more share in their markets.

“The combination of an innovation centre and state-of-the-art technology will provide greater opportunities to collaborate with customers to deliver innovative, inspiring and sustainable solutions.”

Smurfit Kappa will install several high-end printers at the facility to deliver enhaned precision and quality required for ecommerce packaging.

The expansion also includes the development of a new innovation centre for customer collaboration and improve the development of impactful and sustainable packaging solutions.

Smurfit Kappa Americas CEO Laurent Sellier said: “Almost 30% of the total Brazilian population resides in the Northeast region, and Fortaleza offers the perfect platform to strengthen our presence in this attractive and fast-growing part of the country.”

In August last year, Smurfit Kappa announced an investment of $22m for the expansion of its corrugated facility in Culiacan, North-West Mexico.

The company announced that the funds will help modernise and expand the facility with the installation of advanced machinery.
