Siegwerk, a provider of printing inks and coatings for packaging and labels, has unveiled a new generation of sustainable water-based inks, dubbed UniNATURE, for paper and board applications.

Designed as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional inks, the new water-based inks have been produced using renewable and natural components.

The sustainable inks, which are formulated with a high Bio Renewable Content (BRC) measured as per the ASTM 6866 method, feature up to 50% renewable carbon content.

Siegwerk has developed UniNATURE inks for use with Siegwerk’s Unibase and Uni T coloured bases.

With better ink performance and colour strengths, the new sustainable ink range provides similar levels of resistance as current water-based technologies.

The UniNATURE water-based inks will help achieve high printing speeds on both coated and uncoated papers.

UniNATURe range, along with Siegwerk’s sustainable and functional barrier coatings, will create a solution to develop advanced fibre-based packaging solutions.

The new ink and coating series is suitable for multiple paper and board applications such as corrugated board boxes, trays and displays, fast food packaging, sacks and bags, and cups and wraps.

Siegwerk’s new water-based ink range is also suitable for use in various printing applications.

Siegwerk waterbased technology head Paul Pain said: “Paper is not only already one of the most recycled packaging materials globally, but it also holds great potential to offer a viable substitution for plastic for several packaging uses.

“And with UniNATURE we concretely support the defossilization of fibre-based packaging by reducing the use of fossil-based raw materials in inks.”

Finnish paper and paperboard manufacturer Kotkamills is already using UniNATURE range on a fully recyclable paper cup, which is produced using Kotkamills’ ISLA Duo barrier board.

In December last year, Siegwerk announced the launch of mineral oil-free inks in India for packaging applications.
