Sustainable packaging solutions provider Polykar has broken ground on a new manufacturing facility in Alberta, Canada.

The company will invest C$40m ($31.9m) to build the first phase of the new centre of excellence in Edmonton to develop and commercialise flexible and compostable packaging.

Polykar president and CEO Amir Karim said: “We selected Edmonton and Alberta as the ideal location for our second Canadian plant for its dynamism, its openness to the manufacturing sector, and most importantly, because of its highly qualified, skilled and diverse labour force.

“We are excited about this next chapter of the Polykar story and we are delighted to become an active member of the province’s business community.”

Slated to be operational in spring 2022, the new 50,000ft² facility will feature an advanced recycling facility to efficiently divert plastic waste from landfills.

The plant will enable the company to recycle and repurpose the recycling materials, thereby helping the province to create a circular plastics economy.

Within the first two years of operation, the new manufacturing facility is expected to create 70 new jobs in the region.

To serve its Western customers, the company has already commenced its commercial activities with the opening of a temporary warehouse in Edmonton.

Polykar stated that it has announced the first large-scale investment within the Discovery Business Park, South Edmonton’s new premier industrial subdivision developed by Remington & QuadReal.

In a statement, Edmonton mayor Don Iveson said: “Polykar is a strong addition to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region’s manufacturing sector. Their dedication to excellence in sustainability aligns perfectly with our long-term goals to reduce waste and to reduce our carbon footprint.

“Congratulations Polykar, on the ground-breaking of your new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.”
