Procter & Gamble (P&G) has announced a voluntary packaging recall of 8.2 million defective detergent packets packaged in flexible film bags from the US market, citing a potential serious injury to children.

The consumer goods manufacturing company will recall Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods liquid laundry detergent packets.

The recall also includes around 56,741 units sold in Canada of certain lot codes of these defective detergent packets.

According to P&G, the packets ranged from 12 to 39 per bag and were produced between September 2023 and February 2024.

The affected packets were sold from September 2023 through present at Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, and other key stores across the US. They were also sold online at Amazon.com and other websites.

The consumer goods manufacturing firm said that the outer packaging designed to prevent access to the contents of the laundry detergent packets might split open along the zipper track.

It can pose a substantial risk of injury to children and other vulnerable populations if ingested. Additionally, the risks include skin or eye problems.

Furthermore, it can be fatal when people with underlying medical conditions consume considerable amounts of any household cleaning product containing surfactant, Procter & Gamble claimed.

As of now, there are no verified reports of incidents or injuries related to this packaging flaw.

However, the company has received four reports of minors accessing the liquid laundry packets, three of which included ingestion during the period when the recalled lots were sold.

The American consumer goods corporation is offering full refund and free replacement child-resistant bags to customers owning the affected products.

Procter & Gamble has asked the consumers to immediately place the recalled bags out of children’s sight and reach. Additionally, the company is providing a cabinet lock for securing laundry supplies.

The recall applies exclusively to bags distributed in the US and the customers have to look up the lot code on their bag to determine if it is included in the recall.
