Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, along with Bemis and Polykar, has developed a trash bag from recycled plastic scrap.

By using post-industrial plastic scrap, the companies have developed new trash bag, which will be used to clean up beaches across the US during Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup on 16 September.

To develop the trash bags, Bemis collected the post-industrial plastic scraps and shipped them to Polykar, where it used its plastic recycling machines to combine the reclaimed plastics with Dow’s Retain technology.

The developed recycled plastic resin has been used by Polykar to manufacture the bags.

Dow is a founding member of The Trash Free Seas Alliance, which is a global initiative managed by the Ocean Conservancy

Ocean Conservancy brings together industry, science and conservation leaders to identify the causes and develop land-based solutions to prevent waste from entering the ocean seas.

Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics global sustainability director Jeff Wooster said: “We’ve taken on the challenge with Bemis and Polykar, alongside the Trash Free Seas Alliance, to increase post-industrial recycling and extend sustainable industrial practices to address a worldwide problem.

“We know that if we work together, we can find a way to recover plastic waste and use it to make an even a bigger impact on reducing marine debris.”
