Sustainable packaging solutions provider Paccor announced that it has agreed to manufacture 100% biobased polypropylene (Bio-PP) products for consumer goods company Orkla.

Orkla supplies branded consumer goods to the grocery, out-of-home, specialised retail, pharmacy, and bakery sectors in the Nordics.

Paccor, along with Orkla, has commenced the testing of 100% Bio-PP products in its Finnish production site in Hämeenlinna.

The material, which is produced using renewable resources, is said to follow the ISCC certified mass balance principle.

The mass balance principle is a chemical industry standard to manage and trace sustainability characteristics of circular and/or bio-based materials in a complex value chain, said Paccor.

Orkla packaging development manager Elna Hallgard said: “Our collaboration with Paccor is a good example of how a pioneering material can be implemented in food applications and can help to meet consumer demand for more sustainable products.”

Paccor is said to be one of the first rigid plastic manufacturers to produce bio-PP products, including a completely recyclable transparent bowl for frozen ready meals.

Paccor also stated that it is focusing on offering its new bio-composite to business partners across the world following the successful pilot programmes.

Paccor CEO Andreas Schütte said: “We are pleased that we are now able to switch production from virgin fossil to bio-based PP.

“Paccor is an industry frontrunner in sustainability. Our goal is to accelerate circularity and bio-economy in plastics.”

In October last year, Paccor launched packaging solutions with Digimarc-powered digital identity, as part of its environmentally friendly recycling system.
