Oliver Healthcare Packaging, a provider of sterile barrier flexible packaging solutions, has acquired Germany-based film and foil technology producer EK-Pack Folien.

The deal includes Switzerland-based Vacopack H. Buchegger, a fully owned subsidiary of EK-Pack.

Under the terms of the agreement, Oliver Healthcare Packaging will buy the EK-Pack facility which has 23,000m² of manufacturing space with eight production lines to produce multi-layer film and foil laminations.

The healthcare packaging solutions provider will also acquire the Vacopack facility, which is said to have 5,150m² of manufacturing space and speciality equipment to support the production of a wide range of bag packaging.

EK-Pack owner Marco Ziegler said: “We are proud to now be a part of Oliver! Oliver has carved out a leading spot within flexible packaging for healthcare, and this partnership should only strengthen that, especially in Europe.

“EK-Pack has been family-owned for 40+ years, and that’s how Oliver began as well. We are excited to continue providing reliable supply to our food customers while also expanding our activities in healthcare.”

The new acquisition is the latest in the series of multi-million-dollar investments that Oliver Healthcare Packaging has across Europe.

Recently, the firm doubled the manufacturing footprint of its manufacturing facility in Venray, the Netherlands.

Some of Oliver’s other investments include programmes to regionalise their supply chain, the acquisition of more conversion equipment, and investments in automation technologies.

The company is also building its new advanced manufacturing facilities in Malaysia and Costa Rica.

Oliver Healthcare Packaging CEO and president Michael Benevento said: “This acquisition gives us greater control over our supply chain and allows us to innovate new products to meet our customers’ evolving needs.

“In recent years, we have invested heavily in the European region to better support our customer base. This vertical integration is a strategic way to build scale and flexibility while insourcing many of our packaging materials.”

In February this year, Oliver and Infor company partnered to use the latter’s Infor CloudSuite Industrial and artificial intelligence (AI) solution to help supply critical food supplies.
