Sustainable packaging and paper supplier Mondi has partnered with German machine supplier beck packautomaten to launch a flexible paper-based packaging solution, FunctionalBarrier Paper.
Dedicated to the e-commerce industry, FunctionalBarrier Paper can replace extra plastic packaging, enabling shipments to arrive safely in sustainable and right-sized packaging.
The new offering is 95% paper and has improved barrier characteristics to protect products from water vapour and moisture. It is more durable, allowing it to transport larger goods without breaking, said the packaging firm.
FunctionalBarrier Paper is ethically sourced, made of renewable resources, and recyclable in Europe’s existing recycling systems.
Under the collaboration, Beck’s automatic packing system ensures that products of all sizes are packed according to their specifications.
The system measures the packed items and determines the amount of paper required, decreasing waste and expenses by lowering material usage.
In a test conducted in Mondi’s ISTA-certified lab in the Bupak plant, the paper proved that stable stealing on all four sides of the package helped to meet logistics requirements and protects items in transit.

“The need to create bespoke packaging that reduces waste, protects the wide range of products and delivers on sustainability targets is enormous.
“Our FunctionalBarrier Paper enables online retailers to continue reducing the use of unnecessary plastic following our approach of using paper where possible and plastic when useful.”

“In a first cooperation with a European fashion retailer, we reduced plastic use significantly and will be able to save them more than 45 tonnes of plastic every year once the switch is completed.”
