Fibre-based consumer packaging solutions provider Graphic Packaging International has introduced a new sustainable packaging solution, called EnviroClip, for the beverage industry.

The new packaging solution aims to serve as a paperboard alternative to plastic rings and shrink films for typical beverage cans.

EnviroClip is produced from a single ply of paperboard, made using renewable fibre, sourced from sustainably managed forests.

It is developed without the use of adhesives or plastic laminations.

The overall design makes can easy to separate at the point of consumption and has finger holes for convenient carrying.

The packaging solution also features space to print high-impact brand and sustainability messages.

Graphic Packaging global innovation and new business SVP Ricardo de Genova said: “EnviroClip enables beverage companies to significantly increase sustainability by replacing plastic packaging for can multipacks with a recyclable and renewable solution.

“Its launch complements our KeelClip beverage can multipack solution and means we are now able to meet customer requirements across a full spectrum of different sized operations.”

EnviroClip uses small-footprint equipment that can operate at various rates, from manual application to high-speed automation.

The sustainable packaging solution can be used alongside KeelClip for customers who wish to use different packaging formats based on production quantities.

Graphic Packaging’s equipment has a proprietary custom overhead clipping system that provides consistent application of the EnviroClip ring to the cans, ensuring a better pack quality and performance.

The company said that plastic alternatives are suitable for 12-oz (330ml) and 16-oz (500ml) standard cans in four- and six-pack configurations.

Graphic Packaging business development director Steve Gould said: “Since its introduction, KeelClip has gained international recognition for its sustainability performance and the important role it is continuing to play in reducing plastic usage and hard-to-recycle plastic waste.

“EnviroClip builds on the same expertise and innovation, providing an expanded portfolio that makes it possible to meet our customers’ different needs.”
