The acquisition of Primoceler will help Schott to expand its presence in the field of hermetic packaging, which refers to the sealing of electrical contacts with glass or ceramics.

Primoceler provides hermetic packaging technology, which helps to protect sensitive electronics in medical implants and MEMS devices.

Primoceler CEO Ville Hevonkorpi said: “This new partnership with such a global leader positions us excellently to serve our customers around the world and scale up our production.

“We already have been in a trustful business relationship with SCHOTT for years and are happy to develop this further.”

Primoceler has developed a glass-only micro bonding method based on laser technology, which can be completed without any heat or added materials.

The advanced bonding process enables to manufacture vacuum-tight and ultra-miniature electronic or optical devices with enhanced quality.

Glass micro bonding is said to enable new packaging concepts for devices that need high reliability, including medical implants, aerospace, automotive, optical devices, and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) for the Internet of Things.

Subject to certain customary closing conditions, the deal is expected to complete by the end of this year.

Once the deal concludes, the acquired business will be included in Schott’s electronic packaging division. It carries out business operations under the new name Schott Primoceler based in Tampere of Finland.

Schott’s electronic packaging division provides a range of hermetic packaging technologies to protect sensitive electronics in automotive, aerospace, medical, and energy products.

The inorganic and virtually non-aging materials are used as insulators, which prevent the intrusion of moisture and other contaminants.

Schott’s electronic packaging business unit head Peter Kniprath said: “Electronics are entering more and more areas of our daily life. As a part of this, demands for safety and durability have increased. Schott Primoceler Oy will focus on tackling these challenges and working with our customers towards completely new applications.”
