Bioplastics company Danimer Scientific has broken ground on its new biodegradable plastic manufacturing facility in Georgia, US.

In March this year, the company announced plans to invest $700m for the expansion of its Bainbridge manufacturing operations in Georgia.

The company will construct an additional 2,000,000ft² facility for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoate, a biodegradable plastic.

The biodegradable plastic produced at the new facility will be used for the manufacturing of food packaging and straws.

Expected to create up to 400 new jobs, the new facility is slated to be operational by late summer 2023.

Danimer Scientific, based in Bainbridge for more than 10 years, has more than 100 employees in southwest Georgia.

The company produces renewable and sustainable biopolymers, which can be used in single-use and other plastic products.

The biodegradable and compostable materials are used by the customers in different industries, including food packaging, bottling, and other traditional packaging sectors.

Danimer stated that its biopolymers are used in various applications, including additives, aqueous coatings, fibres, filaments, films, hot-melt adhesives, and injection-moulded articles.

In July this year, Danimer Scientific agreed to acquire biodegradable polymer producer Novomer in a deal valued at $152m.

Novomer is involved in the development of carbon-efficient polymers and chemicals, including poly(3-hydroxypropionate) ((p(3HP)).
