Sustainable packaging solutions provider Huhtamaki has partnered with British consumer goods firm Unilever to eliminate the use of plastic from the latter’s Carte D’Or ice-cream range.

The packaging of the ice-cream range will be replaced with paper tubs and lids that are made using fibres from PEFC certified sustainably managed forests.

The new packaging uses 93% less plastic per tub which will help the brand remove over 900 tonnes of virgin plastic annually in the UK.

Huhtamaki FMCG category head Herwin Wichers said: “Huhtamaki is on a journey to becoming the first choice in sustainable packaging solutions with a focus to ensure our products are recyclable, compostable, or reusable by 2030.

“We are delighted to support Unilever’s ambitions for its packaging portfolio which includes halving the amount of plastic used by 2025 and rethinking plastic packaging to use less, better or no plastic. The shift in packaging for Carte D’Or addresses these key targets.”

Wichers added: “We develop fit-for-purpose packaging that is best suited for the product and the environment. It is also why we continue to innovate with more sustainable packaging, designed to play its role in delivering systemic change.”

The new packaging for the Carte D’Or ice-cream range is available across the UK and soon will be introduced to its entire 8-strong range of ice cream.

In July last year, Huhtamaki launched a 100% plastic-free egg carton, Futuro, for cooked coloured eggs in Europe.

Headquartered in Finland, Huhtamaki operates in 36 countries and has 84 sites around the world.
