Beverage firm Coca-Cola India has unveiled 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) bottles for its carbonated beverage range to promote a circular economy.

The company has introduced Coca-Cola in rPET in pack sizes of 250 ml and 750 ml.

The bottles are being produced by Moon Beverages and SLMG Beverages, the company’s bottling partners in India.

According to the beverage maker, the bottles are made from 100% food-grade rPET, excluding caps and labels.

They also have an on-pack call to action Recycle Me Again message and will also drive consumer awareness with fully recycled PET bottles displayed on the pack.

Coca-Cola India, and Southwest Asia technical and innovation VP Enrique Ackermann said: “We seek to drive a circular economy for our packaging in order to reduce waste and carbon emissions.

“We’re working to increase recycled content in our packaging, expand our use of refillable bottles, and to collect packaging for recycling through our World Without Waste initiative.

“We also do research for new solutions for packaging. This expansion by Moon Beverages and SLMG Beverages underscores Coca-Cola India’s steadfast commitment to sustainability and its dedication to forging a more sustainable future.”

Coca-Cola India said that these rPET bottles are made from food-grade PET.

The plastic is recycled using methods that have been certified for use in food-grade recycled materials by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recycled plastic is then converted into a new PET bottle, lowering the need for virgin plastic for PET bottles.

Moon Beverages chairman Sanjeev Agarwal said: “PET plastic bottles have value beyond their first life. Our new bottles made with food-grade rPET are recyclable and can become another bottle giving it another life.

“Recycled PET is a big move in the right direction to embrace plastic circularity in India.”

The Coca-Cola Company is getting closer to achieving its World Without Waste objective of producing bottles with 50% recycled content by 2030 by providing 100% rPET bottles in more than 40 markets.

Recently, the beverage producer was the first company in India to introduce a one-litre bottle made from 100% rPET for its packaged drinking water brand Kinley.
