Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs has launched a new sack paper, Performance White Barrier, to replace the plastic film barrier found in paper sacks.

According to the firm, the new sack paper is similar to conventional alternatives in terms of performance and shelf-life.

It has more advantages in terms of recycling in conventional paper streams, the presence of a printing surface for displaying branding and product content, and a lack of adjustments required in the supply chain.

Performance White Barrier can be used in several sack paper applications, including animal feed, building materials, chemicals, dry foods, and mineral goods.

The sacks can replace the majority of slit and perforated plastic films without significantly affecting shelf-life performance, said BillerudKorsnäs.

The sacks are simple to dispose of using the well-established paper recycling process because it is only made from paper.

BillerudKorsnäs Area Sack & Kraft Paper vice president Armin van Overbeek said: “Both surveys and customer insights show that sustainable packaging is still high on the agenda, driven by consumer preferences.

“With Performance White Barrier, we take another step to replace plastic in packaging.

“What might initially appear as an invisible advantage, as you cannot see the absence of the plastic barrier, becomes clear in the next phase – when somebody is about to recycle a sack or check the sustainability report for a company’s initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Performance White Barrier is simple for a converter to process, and does not require modifying the machinery to make the sacks. The company said that the performance factors such as sack strength, handling and filling rates remain the same.

In July 2021, the company introduced two new low grammages of their flagship cartonboard product, CrownBoard Prestige.
