E-commerce major Amazon has announced that all its delivery packaging, including boxes, bags and envelopes, in Europe is now fully recyclable.

The company said its European customers will now receive packages in recyclable flexible paper bags, cardboard envelopes and corrugated cardboard boxes.

The move is applicable to all items sold by Amazon, along with the third-party selling partners that use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA).

According to the company, the packaging solutions are easily recyclable in household recycling across Europe.

Amazon is collaborating with suppliers to enhance the quantity of goods supplied in original, easily accessible and recyclable cardboard and paper packaging.

The packaging is also ready to ship to consumers together with an address label, without the need for an extra Amazon bag or box.

The company said it uses lighter, correctly sized packaging where necessary to minimise waste and carbon emissions while guaranteeing product safety.

Amazon mechatronics and sustainable packaging vice president Pat Lindner said: “We’re excited that our European fulfilment network is now using recyclable packaging for customer orders.

“This is part of our long-term work to be a leader in sustainability, and we’ll continue to invest in innovative technology, machine learning, and more sustainable materials to ensure packaging – whether used by us or other companies – is good for our customers, communities, and the planet.”

The e-commerce firm aims to improve the packaging using a science-based approach and investment in new materials, processes, and technologies to make them more sustainable.

Amazon is also piloting padded envelopes made only with paper, reusable delivery bags, and incentives for selling partners to reduce their packaging in Europe.

Furthermore, the company has dispatched over 50% more products in Europe without any additional packing in the last year.

Amazon expects that these coordinated efforts have prevented the use of more than one billion single-use plastic delivery bags from our European distribution network since 2019.
