Ahlstrom has announced that its Cristal Transparent Packaging Papers have met ChemFORWARD’s evaluation of human and environmental criteria for safer alternatives through its SAFER programme.

Cristal transparent papers are said to be a suitable alternative to non-renewable materials and can be used to replace plastic or film in a package to make a fibre-based end-use structure.

Ahlstrom, a Finnish fibre-based product maker, said that SAFER designation shows that all chemicals intentionally added and present at or above 100 ppm have been assessed by a toxicology firm using ChemFORWARD’s comprehensive hazard methodology.

The programme ensures human and environmental safety to build a supply chain with third-party verified transparency, and to aid suppliers in chemical management.

Ahlstrom food packaging global vice president Guillaume Latourrette said: “The use of transparent paper in packaging enables the food and e-commerce industries to effectively convey a value of trust in customers’ minds.

“The strong sustainable attributes Cristal already addressed as a natural, compostable, and recyclable packaging solution are now amplified by achieving SAFER status.”

The Cristal technology and products like both transparent papers and PurposeSeal heat seal packaging products are certified recyclable passing the Western Michigan University SBS Equivalency (WMU SBS-E) protocol, the company said.

Additionally, the products have secured third-party certification from Centre technique du papier. It certifies that Cristal’s heat-seal coating is recyclable as per the European Union’s EN13430 standards.

Ahlstrom protective materials business VP Eva Thunholm said: “Recyclable packaging for the e-commerce and industrial packaging industries is absolutely necessary in order to create less waste-to-landfill and reduce our impact on the planet.

“Achieving recyclability and compostability certification, in addition to this endorsement from ChemFORWARD’s SAFER program, offers our customers and the marketplace yet another fibre-based solution to reduce traditional non-renewable substrates in packaging engineering.”

The products are ideal replacements for window packaging, sachets, bags, and for products which require a full view.
