Private equity firm Wynnchurch Capital has announced the acquisition of thermal coating business assets of Appvion and its subsidiaries for an undisclosed sum.

Based in Wisconsin, Appvion is involved in the development of water-based and environmentally responsible coating solutions for everyday consumer applications.

The company offers speciality and high-performance direct thermal coatings for label and film solutions to its customers.

Appvion also supplies coatings for renewable, fibre-based consumer and industrial packaging solutions.

Appvion CEO George Wurtz said: “Since our inception, we have built strong and long-lasting relationships with our customers by offering premium and innovative products, technical expertise and unparalleled service. Wynnchurch shares our values of safety, integrity, honesty and putting the customers first to deliver value.”

Appvion’s functional coating solutions can be used in a range of flexible substrates, including products from an FDA-compliant facility.

Designed to apply for renewable and responsibly sourced paper substrates, the company’s Mission Zero products are functional, water-based and dispersible coatings.

Its coated products can be used in two primary packaging categories, including food service and consumer and industrial packaging.

Wynnchurch vice president Kevin Hanley said: “The business is well-positioned to benefit from strong market tailwinds in labels and packaging, and we look forward to partnering with management to continue to pursue attractive growth opportunities.”

Appvion also offers direct thermal label products, which are suitable for barcode applications that require a variety of environmental, chemical, and resistance properties.

The company has designed its label portfolio to meet specific labelling requirements and equipment for virtually any label application and environment.

In November last year, Wynnchurch Capital acquired US-based expanded polystyrene (EPS) products provider Drew Foam from Branford Castle Partners.
