Sonoco Europe has developed a new sustainable packaging solution, dubbed Hermetic SquareCan, for producers of sensitive goods such as nuts or coffee.

The nearly square packaging solution, Hermetic SquareCan, comes in unusual rectangular format to stand out at the point of sale, the firm said.
The packaging’s printable lids are produced with in-mould labelling technology (IML) to offer additional printing space for brand messaging, or for extra content, such as recipes and health tips.
Due to the virtually square shape of the rigid paperboard container, the solution optimally uses the available space during transport and in storage facilities, thus increasing the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of logistics processes.
Sonoco said that the Hermetic SquareCan is produced in a newly developed process that considerably increases the container’s stability.
The sealed-on aluminium membrane of the packaging turns it into an air- and gastight vault which is perfect for sensitive products like coffee, nuts or even baby food products, including powdered infant formula (PIF), the firm noted.
Sonoco Consumer Products vice-president and general manager Séan Cairns said: “For Sonoco, producing consumer packaging means listening closely to what consumers say, but also understanding what our clients need.
“The perfect package does not merely protect its content from things like moisture, or handling during distribution; it must also be convenient and stylish – while having as small an ecological footprint as possible.”
Sonoco plans to present the new solution at the upcoming 2018 FachPack trade show scheduled to be held from 25- 27 September.
At the event, which is planned to take place in Germany, the firm also plans to showcase other sustainable packaging solutions
Sonoco Consumer Products Europe sales director Andreas Rothschink said: “The use of IML technology, for example, enables us to produce mono-material plastic packaging where both the container and the lid are made of polypropylene and thus have a recycling rate of close to 100 percent.
“At the same time, we produce our rigid paper containers using recycled paperboard as the main material.”
