Percol Coffee is claimed to be the first firm to use a compostable package for all types of coffee packs.

Parkside has used bio-based materials to develop compostable packs, which offer better oxygen, aroma and moisture barriers to extend the shelf life of roast, ground and bean coffee.

The packs, which can maintain optimum flavor, can be fully home compostable and are designed to break down within 26 weeks.

Percol has selected compostable coffee packaging, as part of its efforts to provide plastic-free packaging to the customers.

Percol managing director David Brooks said: “As a company, we strive to be ethical innovators and leaders in the coffee market. This ethos stretches across both product and packaging and was a key reason for choosing to work with Parkside.

“Our new compostable packaging takes us to another level and has positioned us right at the forefront of the market as the only coffee company to receive the Plastic Free Trust Mark.”

Percol coffee pack is said to be part of the Parkside’s Park2Nature compostable packaging solutions.

Parkside sales director Paula Birch said: “This was a fascinating project for us to be involved with. The ethos and values which surround Percol align perfectly with our Park2Nature range allowing us to create an amazing product for them.

“It is also fantastic that the packaging has become the first to be accredited by A Plastic Planet.”

In October this year, Parkside introduced a new fully recyclable single polymer laminate, which is made from 100% polyethylene (PE).

The recyclable single polymer laminate, recoflex-PE, is designed to support a circular economy.

Recoflex-PE’s barrier properties and sealing performance are similar to a range of laminates that are mostly in the flexible packaging sector and are not being recycled at present.

Parkside offers packaging solutions to the customers in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and medical, as well as personal and household care packaging markets.
