UK-based flexible packaging company Parkside has collaborated with breakfast cereal producer Yockenthwaite Farm to develop sustainable packaging for the latter’s granola range.

The partnership intends to use Parkside’s patented Park2Nature packaging material.

The new packaging has replaced the original polypropylene bag and paper label packaging with a new home compostable laminate bag that comes in a bag-in-a-box format.

Park2Nature has high barrier qualities to protect granola against moisture and oxygen ingress across the supply chain.

The flexible packaging company claimed that the laminate is TÜV certified as home compostable. It also breaks down in domestic compost heaps in less than 26 weeks at ambient temperatures.

Parkside sales account manager Paul Lenihan said: “Sustainable packaging doesn’t have to mean a compromise in performance.

“You can meet your sustainability goals and have a pack that meets every functional and aesthetic need when you work with the right packaging partner and the best, most innovative materials on the market.”

According to Parkside, the Park2Nature material can be customised to fit very specific parameters.

The firm developed this home-compostable, high-performance, flexible packaging material after 10 years of hard research and development.

Yockenthwaite Farm owner Liz Hird said: “Parkside has supported us throughout our journey to help us achieve a new level of packaging sustainability.

“The knowledge and expertise of each member of the team have helped us achieve a pack which not only looks great but has also increased our shelf life.”

In March this year, the packaging firm launched its new mono-polymer laminated film to replace non-recyclable aluminium foil and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) structures.

The film, made from polypropylene substrates, is designed for use in a range of packaging formats like flow wraps, bags, sachets, stick packs, pillow packs and pouches.
