UK-based flexible packaging company Parkside has rolled out its new mono-polymer laminated film to replace non-recyclable aluminium foil and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) structures.

According to Parkside, the new laminated film can be placed into existing UK recycling streams.

Made from polypropylene substrates, the film can be used in a range of packaging formats like flow wraps, bags, sachets, stick packs, pillow packs and pouches.

The laminates are offered in duplex or triplex formats, a variety of thicknesses, with either a matt or gloss finish.

All of these options are suitable for full-colour printing, the flexible packaging company said.

Parkside technical head Joshua Swann said: “Aluminium foils and PET laminates are very popular in flexible packaging at the minute, but they lack recyclability.

“Our new mono-polymer laminate eliminates the need for these non-recyclable substrates and can be placed into the existing UK recycling stream once used.”

The novel film is suited for a variety of culinary applications, including coffee, soup, and confectionery.

It also has gas, mineral oil, water, light, and UV barrier performance to improve product shelf-life performance and reduce food waste, Parkside said.

Additionally, the mono-polymer film can also be used in the packaging of products that require more rigorous barrier properties like condiments, toiletries, perfumes, medicines and alcohol.

Swann added: “As a company that prides itself on driving packaging innovation, it’s important that we continue to create new solutions that address flexible packaging sustainability.

“The development of this new laminate underlines our commitment to achieving this goal.”

The new mono-polymer PP laminate expands Parkside’s existing range of environmentally friendly packaging options that allows brands to raise their green credentials.

The UK-based flexible packaging company said the new material follows its Sustainable 7 campaign, which outlined the seven sustainability pillars that Parkside employs as the basis for each project.
