Around 150 participants gathered information about new and further developments in PET packaging systems at KHS Corpoplast’s innovation event this year in Hamburg, Germany.

KHS has presented Smart Line concept designed to apply in various areas, including easy-to-use machines, concepts for parallel filling of several products on one line, faster and reliable format changeover and conservation of resources in the production process.

KHS FreshSafe-PET coating process has been developed for interior coating of PET bottles. The process is turning out to be a significant for local juice and nectar bottlers, as the new packaging act will come into force on 1 January 2019 in Germany.

KHS Plasmax glass inner coating supports bottle-to-bottle recycling and enables to reduce the use of non-recyclable disposable PET bottles.

The InnoPET FormFill concept, which is powered by LiquiForm, molds and fills plastic containers in single step.

Expected to enter the serial production stage at the end of 2019, the compact machine design of the system allows more flexibility and space savings.

KHS service head Dr Martin Koschmieder said: “We reduce material consumption by optimizing the weight and thus decrease the cost of production as well as the cost of secondary packaging.

“Based on the production of 270 million 0.5-liter bottles of highly carbonated water per year, cost savings of up to €770,000 result by reducing the weight from 12.5 to 9.9 grams.”

KHS manufactures filling and packaging systems for the customers in the beverage, food and non-food industries.

KHS Group is comprised of companies such as KHS GmbH, KHS Corpoplast, NMP Systems and multiple subsidiaries outside Germany.

KHS Corpoplast is involved in the development of PET packaging and coating systems, while KHS GmbH produces advanced filling and packaging systems for the high-capacity range.

NMP Systems is involved in the designing and commercialization of packaging systems for PET bottles.

In September this year, KHS unveiled a horizontal form/fill/seal pouching machine designed specifically for the packaging of dry products in single-serve formats.
